Dr Yip completed her medical degree from the University of New South Wales in 2004 and also holds a Masters in Public Health from the University of Sydney. She obtained a performance degree in pianoforte from the Australian Music Examinations Board in 1996. Since graduation, she has worked in both the public and private health care systems in NSW and Queensland.
She has been designing and publishing websites since she was a teenager in high school. She enjoys graphic design and has created promotional and educational posters for internal staff hospital use.
She has an interest in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and was accepted into the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists for specialist training in 2008. Commencing her training whilst pregnant, she has chosen to concentrate on her maternal duties since giving birth to her son.
